Wintry Exploits

From housemade ingredients to hand-cut ice, George’s Level2 in La Jolla is elevating the craft cocktail scene courtesy of master mixologist and beverage director Stephen Kurpinsky—who’s literally written the book on the topic and doubles as the bar’s menu.

This heats-you-up-from-the-inside-out cocktail is chocolatey, malty, and spicy, with aromas of orange blossoms and toasted wood notes reminiscent of aged Cognac. The secret to the spice: ancho reyes chile liqueur, balanced by the sweet vanilla notes of Tequila Dahlia.

Ingredients

1 oz. Tequila Dahlia

.5 oz. Ancho Reyes

.25 oz. Pierre Ferrand Dry Curaçao

2 Tbsp. Ovaltine

1.5 oz. Milk

Method

Steam ingredients into a Toddy glass.

Top with whipped cream and grated nutmeg.

Enjoy!
